Portland, Oregon, has often been called the big city with the small town feel. Its mild weather, breathtaking scenery, exciting location and friendly people have all contributed to its appearance on numerous “Best Of” lists, making relocating or opening a business with Portland industrial space an excellent choice.

A robust industrial business base is essential for any community's economic health as a robust industrial economy create jobs, generates income, produce goods and services and pay taxes. Portland's northwest industrial space area has historically been one such area. It holds companies like ESCO, Westinghouse and General Electric that provide such benefits.

As the U.S. imports more and more of its manufactured goods, more products will be arriving through West Coast ports. Portland industrial space is well-positioned, with room for port expansion and landside connections that are less congested than in California. There has been a steady demand for waterfront industrial land in Portland, close to 30 acres per year.

Industrial land that is affordable and protected from competing uses remains vitally important for start-up businesses. The Port of Portland is the largest developer of industrial space and business parks in the Portland metropolitan area. Within its 10,000 acres of property holdings, the Port oversees six business and industrial space parks. Their various locations offer businesses close proximity to airports, deep-draft marine terminals, transcontinental rail lines, interstate freeways, and a river system that stretches from the Pacific Ocean to Idaho.

The industrial space in Portland, around the Columbia and Willamette, depends on its working rivers. Like most cities of an earlier era, it got its start with waterborne trade and waterside industry. In 2008, it is one of a handful of U.S. cities whose riverside location remains as important as a century ago.

Portland industrial space is an attractive location for small and medium-sized businesses in the metals and machinery industries because it has skilled workers and a network of subcontractors. Established companies like Gunderson, Schnitzer Steel, Evraz Oregon Steel Mills, Boeing, Precision Castparts, and Oregon Iron Works are success stories. So are new firms like U.S. Barge.

Given Portland's ambition, there also are opportunities for synergy between these traditional industrial firms and "green industries." Bicycles and energy technologies, for example, may personify sophisticated expertise, but they are still products made from metal tubing and steel castings.
